This violent action of the Siamese Government has in effect time had the desired result, namely the establishment of the Government monopoly of spirit trading.
... are now in the hands of British subjects, chiefly Gomph firms of Hongkong, rendered unsaleable by the action of the Siamese Government. The state of affairs has been duly reported by H.M. Agency to the Foreign Office, & H.M. Govt have the matter under their consideration. In the mean time H.M. Govt has concluded an Agreement with Govt dated April 6. 1883, employing it's Consular offices to secure from other treaty powers the conclusion of similar conventions which will enable the Siamese Govt to legally deal with the large stocks of spirits imported under the faith of the Treaty which are rendered unsaleable when they come into force.
